Welcome to Friday, Earthlings!

This brand-spanking new newsletter is now my website. That’s right. After over a decade, I finally said goodbye to WordPress. I don’t have any issues with WordPress. It’s quite robust and has served me well over the years. I don’t, however, need all that functionality anymore, and maintaining a WP website was starting to feel a bit cumbersome. Ergo, Beehiiv. Let’s see how this goes.

I’m hoping the newsletter format will spark more conversation between me and you—readers and fellow writers alike.

Submissions to The Cookout anthology close on April 30!

Short Story of the Week

Pop culture, modern technology, and human capriciousness come to a head in John Wiswell’s tongue-in-cheek satire, Welcome to Heroism, published in Uncanny Magazine, Issue 69. Welcome to The Dare, a viral phenomenon inciting the attention-hungry to shock and impress the masses with their subversive, superhuman feats. Be ready to be amused… and low-key filled with dread.

In Case You Missed It

Water Baby, originally published in the Summer 2024 issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine, is avilable as a standalone story for Amazon Kindle. It is currently Free for Kindle Unlimited members.

One after another, people are vanishing from the semi-submerged village of Calypso. Niobe searches desperately for her missing mother night and day. The remaining denizens of Calypso, those who have not abandoned the village yet, look on in silence as she rows her canoe up and down the brackish waterways and plot their escape. Perhaps Niobe, and not one of them, will be the next to disappear.
